Wolastoqiyik Nation: Madawaska Maliseet First Nation, known as the Wolastoqiyik — meaning "People of the Beautiful River" — is a vibrant Indigenous community located in Edmundston, New Brunswick, with deep roots along the Saint John River (Wolastoq) watershed.
Population: The Nation has approximately 1,000 registered members, with a portion residing on the Grey Rock reserve near Edmundston and others living off-reserve across New Brunswick and beyond.
Location: Situated near Edmundston in northwestern New Brunswick, adjacent to the Quebec border and near the Madawaska River, the community maintains close ties to the broader Wolastoqiyik territory spanning the Saint John River valley.
Culture & Economy: The Nation has developed a notable business portfolio including Grey Rock Entertainment Centre and cannabis enterprises, while maintaining Wolastoqey language revitalization programs, elder care initiatives like the Madawaska Elders Initiative, and strong community health services.
